Keith Smart, BSc (Hons) Physio, MSc, PhD

After qualifying as a physiotherapist in 1994 Keith worked clinically as a physiotherapist in several hospitals in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He specialized in the field of ‘musculoskeletal physiotherapy’. He completed his research master’s degree in 2004 and a PhD in 2010, during which he was the primary investigator on a number of research projects that investigated physiotherapists clinical reasoning of pain, and mechanisms-based classifications of low back pain.

He has since acted as a co-supervisor to a number PhD candidates as well as undergraduate and masters-level physiotherapy students. These research projects have variously investigated the nature and prognostic impact of pain sensitization in knee osteoarthritis; the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy combined with exercise in the treatment of chronic pain; and advanced physiotherapy practice. He has also undertaken several systematic reviews related to pain. He is now a full-time academic physiotherapist at University College Dublin but maintains a small clinical caseload as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy and orthopaedic triage at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. He has ongoing research interests related to pain and advanced practice physiotherapy.
